Commonly asked questions about neuromodulator treatment

What are neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators are a natural purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles, creating a smoother and improved appearance.

How do neuromodulators work?

The neuromodulator protein blocks neurotransmitter release in the muscle, temporarily stopping the nerve impulse. As a result, Neuromodulators produce a dose-dependent weakening and relaxing of that muscle without systemic effects.

How are neuromodulators administered?

Tiny injections of Neuromodulator are administered under the skin by a qualified practitioner. Dr. Caroline determines the dosage and location of these injections to get the results you desire.

What are the cosmetic effects

Neuromodulators relax the muscle under the skin. Since the skin is attached to the muscles beneath, the contractions that produce fine lines and wrinkles are diminished. The clinical effect begins a few days after administration, with a peak effect at two weeks. The effects plateau and then gradually wear off until full nerve recovery occurs at three to four months. Therefore, the result is temporary.

Is it uncomfortable?

Most patients experience no discomfort due to the use of very small needles and the techniques applied by Dr. Krivuzoff-Sanderson. Some patients may feel an initial pinprick sensation. If you do experience any discomfort, we can take steps to minimize it for your comfort.

What is involved in the treatment?

As part of our service to you, we take a series of ‘before’ photographs to discuss your aesthetic concerns and desires with you. After the consultation, estimate, and consent are completed, the treatment may take 15 to 30 minutes. The benefit to you is that there is no downtime, and many patients will return to work or carry on with their day immediately after. You will return in two weeks to take the series of ‘after’ photographs to analyze the results, and we will be able to make any small adjustments to your dosing should you desire.

Does the use of neuromodulators have any side effects?

The use of neuromodulators may have some temporary side effects that include bruising, swelling, and tenderness around the area where it is injected. These side effects usually disappear after a few days.

How much does it cost?

The cost of treatment varies by patient, depending on the desires of the patient and the dosing required to achieve the desired results. It also varies by gender and the type of wrinkles being treated. Men generally require more than women. This is discussed during the consultation with Dr. Krivuzoff-Sanderson.

Are you considering Neuromodulators treatment for wrinkle reduction or pain relief?

There are numerous reasons why people choose to undergo Neuromodulator treatment, ranging from the desire to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to finding relief from migraine headaches. Neuromodulators have been successfully employed in both aesthetic and therapeutic applications for over 30 years.

To provide these treatments to patients, dentists must undergo training in these procedures and become certified by the  College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta. Dr. Caroline can use Neuromodulators to address aesthetic concerns in the Upper Face, Mid-Face, and Lower Face/Neck, as well as therapeutic concerns like tension headaches, migraine headaches, TMJ, bruxism (tooth grinding), and myofascial pain and dysfunction.

Why Choose a dentist to do neuromodulators?

Dentists are in an excellent position to offer this treatment because:

  • We know the anatomical structures of the head and neck (our area of study)!
  • We can give comfortable injections; we do it all day long – every day!
  • We offer before and after photography and record keeping to analyze the success of treatment and plan future treatment.

Am I a good candidate for neuromodulators?

Here are the ideal candidates for neuromodulator treatment:

  • Between the ages of 18 and 65.
  • Concerned with facial rejuvenation, aiming to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and signs of aging.
  • Experiencing tension headaches, migraine headaches, myofascial pain, or TMJ symptoms.
  • Seeking non-surgical skin treatments with no recovery time.
  • In good physical and psychological health.
  • Aware that treatments are temporary.
  • Willing to discuss their concerns and desires with their dentist before treatment.

Therapeutic Use of Neuromodulators for Pain and Dysfunction

Neuromodulators can be used to treat (either directly or as an adjunctive therapy) symptoms of the following conditions:

Tension headaches / migraine headaches

Neuromodulator treatment for migraine headaches may lead to improvements in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for patients.

Tooth grinding (bruxism) and cleaning

Neuromodulators can help to relax the muscles responsible for the destructive forces associated with Bruxism and Clenching and the resulting hypertrophy (bulging out) of the cheek muscles.

TMJ Pain

Temporomandibular Joint Pain can be complex. Neuromodulators are often used in conjunction with other therapies to treat TMJ symptoms. The ability of Neuromodulators to alleviate symptoms would depend on the severity of those symptoms and any destruction or dysfunction of the joint. If you have concerns about TMJ pain, please discuss this with Dr. Krivuzoff-Sanderson.

Myofascial Pain

Myofascial Pain Syndrome is characterized by a chronic pain caused by multiple trigger points and fascial restrictions. Pressure on these points can cause pain in seemingly unrelated areas as referred pain.
